Trends Aren’t All That
I thought about getting these very expensive earbuds. They were popular all over the world. I pondered how it could make me popular in school and help me fit in with everyone else, which made me even more anxious to buy them. But it was a phase, a trend. Trends come and go. They don’t stay popular forever. That’s why it’s dangerous to think that they determine who you are.
After I decided that I was going to buy those earbuds, God told me He didn’t want me to get them. I asked Him why He wouldn't let me have what I wanted, and He lovingly explained that I could have the popular product if I saw it as nothing more than what it was: material. I realized He was protecting me from conforming and basing my worth on a physical object, instead of Him. Though society glorifies certain things and claims that having them will make you cooler or seem “well off,” God is our foundation, not items. He is the One you want to glorify and place your worth in, because when the things of this world disappoint and break down – as they always will – God remains loving, good, and true.
Verses: Matthew 6:19-21 NIV, Jeremiah 17:7 NIV
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21 NIV)
“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him.” (Jeremiah 17:7 NIV)
