He Is Your Identity

Sometimes we build our identities based on what's around us. It could be as simple as this: When I looked outside and saw that it was snowing in the middle of April, I thought, “Ok, well, I guess I'm a 'winter person' now, since I live in such a wintery climate.” But what if I moved to Florida? Then, that would change.  And, to complicate matters more, in actuality, where I live is not as wintery in climate as where I dorm. So, was my original determination that I’m a ‘winter person’  correct? Am I a ‘winter person’ or a ‘summer person’? Where do I fit? Well, the answer is: it doesn't matter. This is an example of the overthinking we do from time to time. I overthink social interactions and who I am at times. For instance, the example above would be me overthinking my personality type. However, I can live anywhere at any time and have the same, unique personality while adapting to my environment. I don't have to attach my identity to where I live. Just as we don't have to attach our identities to what we experience, whether good or bad, or the people we are connected to. We don’t even have to attach our identities to our mistakes. We are children of God first, and no matter where we are, He is with us, dwelling inside of us. We don’t need to overthink who we are because beyond our physical appearance and our unique personalities, we belong to Jesus, and that should define who we are and dominate our lives and thoughts.

Think about the fact that if you are a Christian, the Holy Spirit — the Spirit of our Savior Jesus and the God of the universe — is inside of you. Why? To be close to you, to lead you, to guide you, to love you, and remind you that He is your identity.

Verses: 2 Corinthians 1:22 NLT, Philippians 3:20 ESV
“and he has identified us as his own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the first installment that guarantees everything he has promised us.“ (2 Corinthians 1:22 NLT)
"But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,” (Philippians 3:20 ESV)
